1. Kashaaya – The Granny’s Concoction

Kashaaya refers to an Ayurvedic concoction made from any herbs, roots, fruits, leaves or flowers. There are many of them available even as off the shelf products. However, one that is rare and not known to many is the granny’s concoction that has been handed down through generations in a few Indian families. Multiple variants of these are in use though.

A little bit of dried ginger, few peppercorns, a little jaggery (cane sugar) and a few fresh leaves of Indian borage or Doddapatre or Mexican Mint (botanical name – Plectranthus amboinicus) are boiled in a few cups of water and reduced to half the quantity. This concoction is taken two to three times a day provides immense relief from a cough.

The jaggery is just to beat down the strong flavor or ginger and hotness of pepper, whereas the Indian borage has a wonderful flavor and also has compounds that act as an expectorant. Taken hot this provides immediate relief and one of the useful home remedies for dry cough as well as for the other types.

You could even just boil the Indian borage in water without any other ingredients and use it as mentioned above and even that provides relief from a cough.

2. Garlic


Using garlic regularly in our diet is a good habit as it has multiple components that are antibacterial and antimicrobial. Just eating a few fresh garlic cloves can help relieve throat pain and irritation. To make it more appealing, you may add a few drops of honey to it.

Add two to three cloves of garlic in a cup of water and boil it along with a teaspoon of oregano. Once cool, drink this after mixing a bit of honey. This solution will provide relief from a cough and throat ache.

3. Ginger

Ginger is one of the most commonly used home remedies for coughing. Many a time if you get an excessive cough, all you got to do is just to keep chewing bits of ginger. It immediately provides relief from the constant irritation of the throat.

You could also choose to boil ginger pieces in a few cups of water and prepare an herbal solution and take it a couple of times in a day. If you want to improve the taste and also the power of the solution, you may likewise include somewhat nectar and lemon juice to it.

4. Turmeric – The Savior

Tulsi leaves can also be added to the granny’s concoction mentioned above as it packs a punch making the kashaaya more effective.

6. Honey

As you might have already seen, honey is said to have soothing throat effects and is used alone or in conjunction with many of the other home remedies for coughing. Honey is used along with garlic, ginger, lemon and turmeric as well.

To get a good night’s sleep without trouble from a cough, you could just choose to add a spoon of nectar to a glass of milk and take it before you go to sleep.

A mixture of honey and grape juice acts as an excellent relief provider from dry cough.

7. Almonds


Most of us associate Almonds with improving memory power. However, it has a lot of nutritional capabilities that also help in a healing cough and related symptoms. You should simply to drench a few almonds overnight and grind it to a paste and take it a few times a day. You could just eat the soaked almonds too. It is good in a curing cough as well alleviating associated symptoms.

8. Onion

Cutting onions is among the simplest of home remedies for coughing that most people do not know about. It is said that coughing stops due to breathing in the strong vapors emanated while cutting the onions.

A mixture of honey and onion juice take at least twice a day helps alleviate a cough and also soothes irritation in your throat.
